Handling Questions About Your Weaknesses

When preparing for a job interview, it is best to become fully aware of how you want to discuss your work history, special skills, achievement, and career milestones. Another important thing that you should be prepared to talk about is your weak points. Everybody has weaknesses. That’s a given. However, many people are unsure of how they should handle questions about their weaknesses.

In a job interview, you cannot avoid being asked about your weaknesses or how to answer weakness question. Why? Most interviewers ask questions about your weaknesses for several reasons. Normally, they ask this because they are interested in knowing if you are honest about your weak points. They also want to know your attitude towards your limitations and shortcomings.

If you find yourself being faced with this question during an interview, then don’t try to dodge it. Talking about your weaknesses, when done right, is not going to decrease your chances of getting the job. Here is a common scenario. When a candidate is asked “what is your biggest weakness?” he or she tends to answer something like “My biggest weakness is being too much of a perfectionist.” No, this is not the correct approach. Your biggest weakness is not the exaggerated version of your strength. Even though you really are a huge perfectionist, it is not best to make it look like this quality is your biggest weakness.

Instead, you should answer this question by talking about what your actual weakness is. You can talk about a neutral weak point. We all have a neutral weakness that is mostly unrelated to our careers. Think of something that you are not good at. There is no one on this planet who is good at everything so do not be afraid of admitting the things that you are not good at.

Sometimes, the interviewer wants to know a weak point that is related to work. If you want to talk about a work-related skill, then you can do that too. However, don’t forget to mention the steps you are willing to take in order to be better at it. For example, you’re not too good at using some software or programs in the office. It’s okay to say that you’re not an expert, but you’re willing to undergo training if it means achieving higher productivity.

Whichever way you choose to answer this question, always remember to be honest. Don’t try to fake it. It’s easy to come up with stories to make yourself appear like an excellent performer, but the interviewer will always know if you are not being truthful.
